Where Does Flaxseed Oil Come From?
Both the oil and the seed derive from the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum, L.) found in parts of eastern Europe and Asia. Flaxseed oil comes from flax seeds. The oil is a rich source of essential Omega 3 fatty acids. Although fish oil is also high in Omega 3, flaxseed oil derived from the plant contains the antioxidant Vitamin E as well.
Why is Flaxseed Oil Such an Important Supplement?
The typical Western diet is high in Omega 6 and low in Omega 3. Omega 6 is not harmful if balanced by sufficient dietary Omega 3, but too much Omega 6 without sufficient Omega 3 creates inflammation in the body.
